Mortgage insurance โ€” keep your home, not your mortgage

Why mortgage protection matters

A home is usually the largest purchase most people make. Much of your savings goes into the down payment, and monthly mortgage payments are heavy. If the owner dies, a surviving spouse may struggle to raise children and carry the debt alone โ€” which can lead to a forced sale that wipes out the equity you’ve built.

How it works

You buy a term life policy equal to โ€” or greater than โ€” your mortgage. If you die, the insurer pays your beneficiary, who can use the money to pay off the loan and keep the home.

Personal policy vs. bank mortgage insurance

Personal policy Bank creditor insurance
Benefit as mortgage shrinks Stays the same Usually decreases
Who gets paid Your chosen beneficiary The bank
Change lenders Coverage stays in force Coverage usually ends
Convert to permanent Often possible (usually to age 65) Not usually

Because you own the policy, you can shop for better mortgage rates at renewal without having to qualify medically again.

Coverage for both spouses

Each spouse can hold separate coverage equal to the mortgage. The cost is similar to a joint first-to-die policy โ€” but if both spouses die together, the home is paid off and there’s still money to support the children.

Brinder works with you to set the coverage amount and term based on your needs, age and budget, with the focus on flexibility and value.

Is this right for you?

  • New home buyers and families with a mortgage
  • Homeowners renewing or switching lenders
  • Couples who want both incomes protected

Frequently asked questions

Is this better than the bank's mortgage insurance?

A personal policy keeps a level benefit, pays your chosen beneficiary and moves with you if you change lenders โ€” bank coverage usually doesn't.

Can I add critical illness coverage?

Yes. Many families pair life and critical illness coverage so the mortgage is protected if either happens.
