Super Visa requirements โ€” explained simply

What parents, grandparents and their families need for a Super Visa application, and how the insurance requirement works.

Who can apply?

The Super Visa is for parents and grandparents of Canadian citizens and permanent residents. It allows long visits to family in Canada โ€” much longer than a regular visitor visa โ€” and can be valid for up to 10 years with multiple entries.

What the application usually needs

  • A signed letter of invitation from the child or grandchild in Canada, promising financial support
  • Proof that the host’s household meets the minimum income requirement
  • An immigration medical exam
  • Proof of private medical insurance that meets IRCC’s rules (below)
  • Other standard visa documents such as passport and photos

The insurance requirement

Requirement What it means
Insurer A Canadian insurance company, or an authorized foreign insurer
Length Valid for at least one year from the date of entry
Coverage At least $100,000 of emergency coverage
What’s covered Health care, hospitalization and repatriation
Payment Paid in full, or in instalments with a deposit
Proof Submitted with the application and shown at the border if asked

Always confirm the latest rules on the official IRCC Super Visa page. Immigration requirements can change; this page is general information, not immigration advice.

Choosing the right insurance

Super Visa plans differ in how they treat pre-existing conditions, the deductible, refunds if the visa is refused or your parents leave early, and side trips outside Canada. Brinder compares plans from multiple insurers with a best rate guarantee.

Frequently asked questions

How long can parents stay on a Super Visa?

Parents and grandparents can stay for long periods at a time โ€” up to five years per entry under current IRCC rules โ€” and may apply to extend. Always check IRCC for the latest rules.

Does the insurance have to be from a Canadian company?

IRCC accepts plans from Canadian insurers and from certain authorized foreign insurers. We recommend a Canadian plan, which we can quote and explain.

Can Super Visa insurance be paid monthly?

Yes. IRCC accepts plans paid in instalments, as long as the policy is valid for the required period. A deposit may be required.

When do I need to show proof of insurance?

Proof is submitted with the application, and border officers may ask to see it when your parent or grandparent arrives in Canada.
