Start saving early
The Registered Education Savings Plan (RESP) is a tax-sheltered plan that can help you save for a child’s post-secondary education. Savings grow tax-sheltered, and the government adds grants to your contributions.
Free money from the government
- Canada Education Savings Grant (CESG): 20% on the first $2,500 contributed each year โ up to $500 a year, with a lifetime maximum per child.
- Additional support: lower-income families may qualify for extra grant money and the Canada Learning Bond.
When your child goes to school, withdrawals of growth and grants are taxed in the student’s hands โ usually at a very low rate.
Is this right for you?
- Parents and grandparents of young children
- Families who want to use government grants
- Anyone planning for a child's education
